Dummy Ticket: Complete Guide for Visa Applications

Empty café counter with chairs and magazines on a shelf in warm evening light

A dummy ticket is a flight itinerary you show before you have bought a ticket. Most consulates ask for one with a visa application: they want to see when you arrive and when you leave, not a paid fare. The trouble is that "dummy ticket" means two different documents, and mixing them up is the most common way it goes wrong.

  • A flight reservation is a real booking made in the airline's system in your name. It has a booking code (PNR) that a consulate, a visa centre or an airline can look up on the airline's website. The ticket is not paid, and the airline cancels the reservation when the hold ends.
  • A sample itinerary is a document laid out like an airline itinerary, with your name, flights and dates. There is no booking behind it, so nobody will find it in an airline system.

This guide covers what consulates accept, when each document fits, how to get a reservation without paying for the ticket, and the mistakes that get applications questioned.

Why embassies ask for a flight reservation

A visa officer reads your flights together with the rest of the application. The itinerary answers a few practical questions:

  • When you enter and when you leave, so the visa can be issued for the right dates.
  • That you plan to leave before the permitted stay ends.
  • Where you enter and leave, and whether the route fits your hotel bookings and the purpose of the trip.

What most consulates do not want is a paid ticket. Many tell applicants directly not to buy one before the decision: if the visa is refused or delayed, a non-refundable fare is lost, and moving the dates costs change fees.

What consulates accept

Requirements differ between countries, and even between consulates of the same country. Most checklists ask for a flight reservation, a booking or an itinerary for the dates of the trip. A few cases need a paid ticket, and some checklists say the reservation must be confirmed or verifiable, which means it has to exist in the airline's system.

The official checklist of the consulate, or of the visa centre that takes its applications (VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS International), has the last word. Read its exact wording before you choose a document.

KeyFlight makes both, and keeps them apart: a flight reservation is booked with the airline, while the dummy ticket and the sample ticket generator make sample itineraries.

Why use a reservation instead of buying a ticket

  • You don't want to pay before the decision. No non-refundable fare is at risk if the visa is refused.
  • Your dates may change. Work schedules and appointment slots move, and a reservation is not tied to a fare you paid.
  • Long or uncertain processing. Long-stay visas and consulates with high refusal rates are exactly where buying a ticket early is a gamble.
  • It arrives fast. A reservation from KeyFlight usually comes by email in about 5 minutes.

Risks and limitations

  1. Consulates and airlines can check. Anyone with the booking code and your last name can open the reservation on the airline's website. A sample itinerary will not be found.
  2. A document must be what it says it is. Presenting a sample as a booking, or editing a confirmation, is false information in a visa application. It can lead to a refusal, and many visa forms later ask whether you have ever been refused.
  3. Reservations expire. How long the airline holds an unpaid booking depends on the airline and the flight date. For a flight in the next day or two it can be hours rather than days, and some carriers, low-cost airlines especially, hold unpaid bookings only briefly.
  4. It is not a ticket. You cannot check in or board with a reservation. Once the visa is issued, you buy the ticket you actually want.

How to get a flight reservation for a visa without paying for the ticket

Option 1: hold a fare with the airline

Some airlines let you hold a fare for a limited time before paying, sometimes for a small fee. It comes straight from the airline, but the hold is usually short and may run out before your appointment.

Option 2: ask a travel agency

A travel agency can make a reservation in the airline system and send you the itinerary. Expect a service fee, and ask how long the agency will keep the booking.

Option 3: a reservation service

KeyFlight's flight reservation books a real flight in your name and emails you the itinerary with the airline booking code. You pay a service fee, not the fare. The flight is booked automatically right after payment, usually in about 5 minutes; if the automatic booking does not go through, the reservation is made by hand and sent within 24 hours. Up to 4 passengers fit in one reservation.

Step by step

  1. Read the checklist and note the dates you put in the application form.
  2. Prepare the details: every passenger's full name exactly as in the passport, the cities and the dates.
  3. Order shortly before your appointment, so the airline's hold covers the day you submit the application.
  4. Check it yourself: open "Manage booking" on the airline's website and enter the booking code and your last name.
  5. Print it and keep the PDF with the rest of your documents.

Most checklists also ask for proof of accommodation for the same dates. A hotel confirmation covers that part of the file; it is a document for your plan, not a reservation made with the hotel, so check what your consulate asks for.

Common flight booking mistakes in visa applications

  1. Buying a non-refundable ticket before the decision. If the visa is refused or delayed, the money is gone. Use a reservation, or buy a refundable fare if you must buy.
  2. A name that does not match the passport. Spelling, the order of names and a missing middle name all raise questions. Copy the name from the passport page.
  3. Dates that do not fit the application. The flights must fall inside the visa period you request and match the hotel bookings and the travel insurance.
  4. A reservation that expired before the appointment. Ordered too early, the booking may be gone by the time anyone checks it.
  5. Ignoring transit rules. A connection in a third country can need a transit visa. Check every country on the route, or choose a route that avoids the problem.
  6. Using a document that is not what it claims. A sample itinerary or an edited booking presented as a reservation is the fastest way to a refusal.
  7. Not keeping copies. Save the PDF and print it: you may need it at the visa centre, at check-in and on arrival.

Alternatives to a reservation

  • A refundable ticket. A real ticket you can cancel. You pay the full fare upfront, and the refund can take weeks; read the fare rules first.
  • Travel insurance that covers visa refusal. Some policies refund a ticket if the visa is refused. Check the terms before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to use a flight reservation for a visa application?

Yes, when it is a real reservation in your name. Holding a booking and letting the airline cancel it when the hold ends is how airline reservations work. What is not acceptable is a document that pretends to be a booking when it is not one.

Do embassies check flight reservations?

Some do. With the booking code and your last name, anyone can open the reservation on the airline's website, and it takes a consulate or an airline a minute. Plan as if it will be checked.

What if the visa takes longer than the reservation lasts?

The reservation is needed when you submit the application. If the consulate later asks for an updated itinerary, make a new reservation for the new dates.

Can I fly with a dummy ticket?

No. Neither a reservation nor a sample itinerary is a paid ticket. After the visa is issued, buy the ticket you want to travel on.
