Temporary Flight Reservation: How It Works and How Long It Is Held

A temporary flight reservation is a booking that exists in the airline's system before anyone pays for the ticket. It has a booking code and your name, so it can be looked up, but it does not last: if no ticket is issued in time, the airline cancels it. That is why it is useful for a visa application or proof of onward travel, and why timing matters more than anything else.

How a reservation without a ticket works

Booking a flight is two steps. First the seat is reserved: the airline (or the booking system it uses) creates a record with the passengers, the flights and a booking code, also called a PNR. Then the ticket is issued: the fare is paid and a ticket number is attached to that record. Only the ticket gives you the right to fly.

Between the two steps the reservation carries a deadline, the ticketing time limit. If no ticket is issued by then, the airline's system cancels the reservation and the seat goes back on sale. A temporary flight reservation is simply a booking used inside that window.

  • It is real: the airline has it, and the booking code works on the airline's website while the reservation is active.
  • It is not a ticket: you cannot check in or board with it.
  • It does not last: once the time limit passes, the code finds nothing.

How long the airline holds it

There is no single answer. The time limit is set by the airline and depends on the fare, the route and how close the departure is. From the reservations we make every day, holds range from about 15 minutes to several weeks, sometimes a month:

  • Many US airlines keep unpaid bookings very short.
  • Full-service airlines on international routes often give the longest holds, especially when the flight is weeks away.
  • The departure date matters most. For a flight tomorrow, do not expect the booking to last even a day. For a flight two months away, it may stay for several weeks.

These are likelihoods, not promises: the airline decides, and it can cancel an unpaid booking earlier than usual.

The 24-hour rule in the US. For bookings made a week or more before departure, US rules require airlines to either hold the quoted fare for 24 hours without payment or let you cancel without penalty within 24 hours (14 CFR 259.5). Most airlines choose the free cancellation, which means you pay first and get the money back if you cancel in time.

How to get a temporary flight reservation

Hold the fare with the airline

Some airlines offer a "hold" or "fare lock" option when you book on their website, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee that is not refunded. It is the most direct way, but only a few airlines offer it and the hold is often short.

Ask a travel agent

A travel agent can put a reservation in the airline system without issuing a ticket. Many charge a service fee, and how long the booking lasts still depends on the airline.

Use a flight reservation service

A flight reservation from KeyFlight books the flight in your name and sends you the booking code. You pay a service fee, not the fare. It usually arrives in about 5 minutes; if the automatic booking does not go through, the reservation is made by hand and sent within 24 hours. How long it is held still depends on the airline and the flight date.

Not the same thing: a sample ticket is a document laid out like a ticket, with no booking behind it. It is for travel plans, drafts and mock-ups, not for anyone who checks the booking.

How to check that the reservation exists

  1. Open Manage Booking (or My Trips) on the website of the airline in your itinerary. checkmytrip.com and viewtrip.travelport.com work for many airlines too.
  2. Enter the booking code and the passenger's surname exactly as on the reservation.
  3. You should see the flights, the dates and the names. If the airline's site does not open a booking without a ticket, try the other two sites.

If nothing comes up, the time limit has probably passed and the reservation has been cancelled.

Timing it for a visa appointment

  • Book close to the day you need it. A reservation made a week before the appointment may be gone when the consulate looks at it. A day or two before, or the same day, is safer.
  • Ask what the consulate checks. Most want to see your planned dates of arrival and departure, and many advise against buying a ticket before the visa is granted. Our guide to flight reservations for visa applications covers what they usually accept.
  • Keep the dates consistent. The reservation, the hotel confirmation and the cover letter should all show the same trip.
  • Need proof of onward travel instead? Airlines may ask for it at check-in, even without a visa. See the onward ticket guide.

Questions people ask

Is a temporary flight reservation legal?

Yes. Holding a seat before paying is a normal part of how airlines sell tickets, and travel agents do it every day. What matters is that you present it as a reservation, not as a paid ticket.

Can I fly with it?

No. To board you need a ticket, so buy one once your visa is approved or your plans are final.

What happens when it expires?

The airline cancels the reservation and releases the seat. Nothing is charged, and the booking code stops working.
